An annual basketball fundraiser at Central College Christian School raised nearly $8,000 for the Montaña de Luz children’s home in Honduras.
Preschool teacher Mary Townley, organizer of the Hoops for Honduras program, presented a check for $7,918.21 to Anna Jackson, MdL executive director, and Doug Haddix, MdL board member, during a morning chapel service at the school in Westerville, Ohio.
Students get pledges from family and friends to sponsor them for each basket they make during a special gym class led by Coach Tim Barker. During this year’s fundraiser, students made a record 5,027 baskets.
During the chapel service, students sang songs and prayed in English and Spanish.
Jackson thanked the school for its many years of supporting MdL. The children in Honduras begin their day much as the students at Central College Christian School, she said, with a chapel gathering that also includes prayers, Scripture readings, music and dancing.
Townley and Barker commended the students and their families for building a strong connection with children in another country who benefit from their love and donations.
Montaña de Luz (Mountain of Light) operates a children’s home in rural Honduras for youth affected by HIV/AIDS. The nonprofit organization, founded 25 years ago, also provides support through community outreach and education programs.
