Hoops with Heart: CCCS Students Net $6,600 for Montaña de Luz

Hoops 2026 Check Ceremony

An annual basketball fundraiser at Central College Christian School marked 15 years of support for Montaña de Luz’s children’s home in Honduras.

Preschool teacher Mary Townley, organizer of the Hoops for Honduras program, presented a check for $6,614.50 to MdL Board Member Tinu Oduloye and Development Director John Holzaepfel during a morning chapel service at the school in Westerville, Ohio.

In September, students were able to learn more about the mission of Montaña de Luz, as well as get to know some of their friends in Honduras living on the mountain – finding out in real time the universal popularity of soccer! Students obtained pledges from family and friends to sponsor them for each basket they shoot during a special gym class led by Coach Tim Barker. During this year’s milestone fundraiser, students set a new record by making nearly 6,000 baskets!

The fundraiser was originally started by former gym teacher, Tim Loehr, following an immersion trip down to MdL. As a special touch this year, all the students signed a poster reading “Central College Loves Montaña de Luz!” to send encouragement and care to the children in Honduras.

Holzaepfel thanked the students, teachers, and families for their 15-year legacy of dedication, emphasizing how much the continued love and kindness from the Central College Christian School community means to everyone at Montaña de Luz.

A tremendous thank you to CCCS for their years of support and partnership with Montaña de Luz, we are so grateful for another successful Hoops for Honduras!
